Integrated Reflective Practice (IRP)©
The Foundation of a Business Capstone Experience

Image of the Integrative Reflective Practice Model

Integrated Reflective Practice (IRP)© includes three components of your capstone experience that, taken together, describe everything you will be doing in your capstone project. These three components are:

  • Action Research Project – This is the capstone project itself, along with your activities of researching your Positive Change Project, collaborating with others, proposing your ideas, obtaining feedback, engaging in dialogue and more.
  • Areas of Management Practice – This is a typical bundle of key content areas (courses, skills, concepts, tools) that you have studied as part of your business curriculum. The competencies and skills you’ve learned are surprisingly similar, regardless of your particular Business school, the degree level (undergraduate or graduate) or program (business, leadership, marketing etc.).
  • Reflective Practice – This is the process of reflective learning that you will be going through as you engage in your project, build your own leadership skills in managing the project and become the expert on your change or entrepreneurial idea. It also includes everything to do with your learning experience, both independently and with others.

This model provides the “stake in the ground” and as a touchstone for your Business Capstone experience and the learning process underlying the book Doing by Learning.

“Reflecting forward to your vision of personal success doesn’t need to be a complicated or laborious process but does ask for deliberate reflection about what your own personal and professional aspirations are, even if they are slightly ambiguous.”
